Nobody is a villain in their own story. We’re all the heroes of our own stories – George R. R. Martin.

The moment I read this; a lightbulb went off in my head.

These simple sentences changed everything in how I viewed my characters and changed how I wrote them.

Each character believes they are in the right.

Even when they are wrong.

Often, people who are wrong don’t know it. They think they are in the right.

And often, people who are right don’t know it. They think they are in the wrong.

This right there creates the best characters. Now, of course, every story is different, but there’s always room for miscommunication, which can then lead to better plots, lines, or even sub plots to drive the story forward.

The best way to develop your characters is to ask whatmotivates them and what drives their motivations. Once you settle this, remain consistent with your character until circumstances change for them, creating an avenue for growth, regardless of the direction.
